Hi, I'm Shannon - Owner & Operator!
On December 18, 2018 I became a first time mom. This was not only the best thing to ever happen to me, but it was also a huge life changer! Now having my daughter, Cora, I am even more eco-conscious and focused on living a more ethical and sustainable lifestyle than ever before.
I started this website as just a eco lifestyle blog - sharing sustainable living tips, eco-friendly products and plant care info. As time went on, I started blogging more and more about plants and I was getting a lot of positive feedback! For years now, I have been dreaming about opening a small boutique shop - I didn’t know what I wanted to sell in the shop, but I visioned it being on the corner, lots of windows, black & white colors, plants everywhere and furnished with old antiques.
One day, a friend suggested I open a plant shop, and I was humbled by their words, but just kept brushing the idea off. Until one day, I realized how many friends & family members were actually coming to me for advice and suggestions. I felt so honored knowing these people were coming to me for plant help! There is something very satisfying about helping plant joy into someone's life with plants. Maybe it’s the mother in me, but watching a plant grow, caring for it and filming its every move is what brings me joy and I want others to feel that joy as well, so that is when I decided to take my friends advice and open a plant shop!
In June 2020, Explorganics Plant Shop was born! I started out doing local pop-up shops in Bel Air and Havre de Grace, and shipping plants across the US and to Canada. On November 1, 2020, I opened up my very first storefront in Bel Air! The goal with the storefront was to create a space for rare + tropical houseplants and feature an artisan corner to support other amazing local artists, such as @mandejewelry, @thevraieshop, @lemonbubbly, @shepaintsbystars, @wrenandolivia and more!
Since I was a little girl, I’ve always been fascinated by houseplants but it wasn’t until 8 years ago the hobby really began. I was lost, I suffered (and still do suffer) from depression and anxiety and I was searching for natural ways to ease my stress and anxiety. I started hiking, exploring and adding plants to my home.
Long story short, here I am - the owner of the one and only boutique plant shop in Harford County, Maryland! My goal with the design of the store was to create a space where my guests feel safe, happy and provide them an escape from the real world, especially this year! I am honored to be given this opportunity at The Armory Marketplace in Bel Air and I am BEYOND grateful for all of the wonderful, amazing people I have met along this journey!
When I was designing the space, I wanted two things - to furnish the store by up-cycling & repurposing and to make the store feel like home. 2020 has been a tough year for everyone, and I wanted to provide a zen environment for customers to come feel safe and comfortable, surrounded by plants and positive energy.
As someone who struggles with anxiety and health issues herself, I wanted my customers to have a place they can come visit, relax and just take a break from reality. So if you're in the area, stop on by. Make yourself at home & let the plants work their magic on you.
A note to all the other women business owners...
Here’s to us. Here’s to accomplishing your goals even when you thought it was impossible. Here’s to being 10 people at once, wearing all the hats and multitasking like a champ. Here’s to never giving up, even when you had a breakdown (and cried on the floor in the closet 🙋🏻♀️). Here’s to getting back up off the floor and fighting for what you’re passionate about (even though you wanted to give up 1000 times 🙋🏻♀️). Here’s to being moms and wives/girlfriends and dog moms and business owners and yourself and everything in between at the same. damn. time. Here’s to making it through a god damn pandemic. Here’s to coming through STRONGER THAN BEFORE! Here’s to supporting each other and never feeling intimidated by one another. Here’s to us, ladies. Remember how far you’ve come. Don’t give up, don’t settle. Keep doing you, because you’re killing it and I’m proud of every single one of you!
